2024-2025 Courthouse Remodel

The photos and reports below show and explain the remodeling of the exterior and interior of the Johnson County Courthouse. By clicking on the button links you can read through the engineer's regular progress reports on the construction.
The scaffolding is in place for the Phase 1 Restoration work on the Johnson County Courthouse
s a completed sample of the restored bullseye windows. The window had received a new layer of fiberglass, resin and gel coat. The ornamentations had been reattached in a more permanent manner. The architect’s representative approved the restoration work.
Observation Report #1
The image shows the existing roof joist situation wherein the non-bearing joist ends will protrude through the new ceiling construction. The contractor was given permission to horizontally cut the joist to remove the protruding nonstructural portion of each joist.
Observation Report #3
Intermittent light rains have caused rust to form on the horizontal surfaces of the sheet metal that have been media blasted. This has occurred on the image shown
Observation Report #5
The contract documents show that new composite columns with Corinthian column capitals replace the existing sheet metal columns with stamped acanthus leaves. The capitals appear to have not fit or been installed in a manner that was aesthetic nor long lasting.
Observation Report #7
The image shows the installation of fresh new mortar properly applied by an experienced mason to the exposed mortar joints to the right of the original sample wall. The mortar was mixed in Mid-Continental’s shop and brought to the job site. It was indicated that the slaking temperature reached 220 to 225 degrees Fahrenheit, meeting the requirements of the contract specifications.
Observation Report #9
The images  show the southeast facade of the tower. Note the darker areas denote epoxy filled holes while the white sealant is placed in the crevices and seams.
Observation Report #11
Patching and repairing of the sheet metal work with epoxy filler and sealant was taking place during the site visit.
Observation Report #13
The highest possible location of the new horizontal roof support beam is still below the head of the room access doorway and as shown. The bottom of the beam is approximately 6 foot above the floor.

Image shows ceiling and blown-in insulation removed.

The image shows work in progress sheathing the southwest corner tower roof.
Observation Report #2
The image shows the sheet metal with the paint removed. Note that the media blasting will not remove sealants or other flexible materials.
Observation Report #4
The image shows the new copper rib on the dome. Note the solder at the joint between the lantern and rib to maintain a complete watertight unit.
Observation Report #6
As shown in the image, the consensus determined the original acanthus leaves taken from the free-standing columns would be salvaged and used to replace the missing, damaged, altered leaves of the pilasters.

The image shows the installation of the first horizontal furnace

All of the ceiling patches that were visible were made with plywood, which does not meet the requirement for fire separation.
Observation Report #12
The image shows the completion of the new composite column capitals, shafts and bases. The work blends well with the existing sheet metal work and the design intent of the original structure.
Observation Report #14
The image of the furnace shows that the unit is properly plumbed and in full operation during this visit.

The image shows he workman completing the area of the new drywall ceiling work.
Observation Report #18
The image shows the installation of the new ceiling on the second floor.
Observation Report #19
The removal of the acrylic latex coating remains approximately half complete as shown in the image.
Observation Report #20
Workmen were installing flat lock copper roofing on the southwest quadrant of the courthouse. Flatlock copper roofing is installed by placing individual sheets of copper with two edged turned up and opposite sides turned down. Thus, the sides interlock and are soldered with molten tin and lead which flows into the joints with the application of flux and heat.
Observation Report #22
The image to the right shows the pedestals have been placed on the lower tower platform to receive a pair of columns with a balustrade between them.

The image shows that the copper work has begun on the southeast quadrant of the courthouse roof.
Observation Report #26
The image shows the balance of the northwest quadrant and the newly painted sheet metal dentil work on the tower.

The image shows the roofing crew installing the ridge cap on the standing seam south gable looking to the west.
Observation Report #30
The placing of copper sheets, copper anchors, and soldered overlapped joints is tedious work as shown in the image
Observation Report #32
Workmen were installing flat lock copper roofing on the southwest quadrant of the courthouse.
Observation Report #21
The folded seam flat-lock roof continues to be installed as shown above. The copper is being turned up the gable to receive the new standing seam copper roofs.
Observation Report #23
The new composite columns and balustrade have been placed on each of the cardinal elevations of the courthouse tower.
Observation Report #25
The image shows the work underway on the second quadrant in the southeast corner of the courthouse.

The image is from the northeast quadrant and shows the new access hatch to the mechanical room.

The image shows the completed southeast quadrant of the roof

Additional soldering will be completed on the final three panel sections and the transitional flashing for the standing seam roofing as shown
